According to the history of Mauritius Islands, it was first visited by the Malay and the Arab sailors in the 10th century. They were followed by the Dutch and then the Portuguese. Though the Dutch were the first to settle they abandoned the island due to unfavorable weather. The French took over and under their rule the island developed a prosperous economy. A series of battle were fought between the French and the British, and finally the British were able to establish their claim over Mauritius. Finally, in the year 1968 Mauritius gained independence and was declared as a republic.
